MJCA Starts the Spring Sports Season

Mt. Juliet Christian Academy baseball had a 2 and 3 start to the week, with a 10-7 win over Hillwood and a 14-4 win over Red Boiling Springs, but two tough losses by 10 or more to Knoxville Webb. The Saints will have a busy week coming up, as they travel to McGavock on Monday, Lighthouse Christian Tuesday, and return home Thursday for Pearl Cohn and Saturday for Hillwood. The Saint soccer team took a tough loss to open the season, dropping a 6-0 decision against the Fightin’ Feet of The Webb School. And softball travels to Ezell-Harding on Tuesday.

MJHS Girls Tripped Up in State Semis

Our Mt. Juliet High School Lady Bears came up just short in the TSSAA State Basketball Tournament this weekend. Mt. Juliet overwhelmed Jefferson County 65-37 in the Quarterfinals on Friday night, winning each of the first three quarters by 10 points or more. The Lady Bears did not allow any Jefferson County players to score in double figures, while the Black and Gold shot 71-percent from the floor. Sally McCabe led the way for Mt. Juliet with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Ronjanae DeGray added 18 and 6.

In the semifinals, however, the Lady Bears ran into a team of destiny–the Murfreesboro Blackman Lady Blaze. B-H-S won the first quarter 13-8, but Mt. Juliet rallied with a 12-6 second to lead Blackman 20-19 at the half. The Lady Blaze won the third 16-8 for a 35-28 lead, but the fourth quarter was the biggest war of all. DeGray nets 6 straight points while Blackman managed a pair of free throws, and a McCabe bucket pulled Mt. Juliet within 3 at 39-36 with 2:37 left in regulation. Blackman adds 4 unanswered points before the Lady Bears get a three from Ashley Roby to make it 45-39 with 1:48 left, but the Lady Blaze were able to build a 10 point lead before Mt. Juliet could score again, and ground out a 55-46 win.
Blackman would go on to win the State Championship over Ridgeway, and in the process took home National Championship honors as well. The boys’ tournament starts this week, and the Wilson Central Wildcats open up against Brentwood in the second game on Wednesday, after Blackman faces Hamilton; the winners of those games do battle on Friday morning. In the rest of the bracket Siegel faces Arlington, before Oak Ridge collides with Jefferson County.

Basketball Pushes on to State

Area sports teams are making their march to Murfreesboro for the state basketball tournaments. The Mt. Juliet Lady Bears open up their TSSAA Class AAA State Tournament experience Wednesday at 1:15 against Jefferson County. The winner of that game plays the winner of Murfreesboro Blackman and Houston Friday morning at 11:30; the girls’ championship game is Saturday at 2.

The Wilson Central boys were set to host Hunters Lane this Monday night in a Sectional game, with the winner making it into the state tournament; that game has been moved to Tuesday night at 7pm due to inclement weather. While no one else from the county is still playing basketball, our neighbors in Murfreesboro have two boys’ teams still fighting on this Tuesday night, as Siegel hosts Walker Valley and Blackman visits Stone Memorial. The boys’ draw for state tournament opponents and start times will be Wednesday in Murfreesboro; baseball and softball officially starts the regular season next week.
